What Do We Mean by “Compatibility”?
Compatibility covers more than just “do these two ingredients explode together” (though sometimes it’s exactly that dramatic). In cosmetic formulation, incompatibility shows up in four main ways:
Ingredients react with each other and destroy each other’s function. Vitamin C oxidised by Benzoyl Peroxide. Hydroquinone turned brown. Retinol degraded before it ever reaches skin.
Phase separation, precipitation, or texture failure. A cationic conditioner dropped into an anionic carbomer gel. Salt added too early, collapsing your viscosity.

The Classic Conflicts Every Formulator Should Know
Vitamin C and Its Enemies
L-Ascorbic Acid is one of the most evidence-backed skincare actives available. It’s also one of the most reactive. Here’s what it fights with:
Oxidises Vitamin C almost instantly. Hard incompatibility — these should never share a formula.
At elevated processing temperatures, can react with Ascorbic Acid to form niacin, associated with skin flushing. Separate into AM/PM if in doubt.
Catalyse the Fenton oxidation of Vitamin C, causing rapid discolouration and loss of activity. Chelating agents and antioxidants essential.
Accelerates Ascorbic Acid degradation. Use stable derivatives — Ascorbyl Glucoside or Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate — in mineral SPF formulas.
Keep pH below 3.5 · Add Ferulic Acid and Tocopherol as antioxidant synergists · Use opaque, airtight, nitrogen-flushed packaging. These three steps solve most Vitamin C stability problems.
The Retinol Sensitivity Matrix
Retinol is unstable, photosensitive, and irritation-prone. Combining it with other unstable or acidic actives amplifies all of those problems.
Lower formula pH into territory where Retinol destabilises, while simultaneously driving up irritation risk. Almost always better separated into different products or different times of day.
Oxidises Retinol just as it does Vitamin C. Keep them apart entirely.
Degrades Retinol rapidly. Retinol belongs in evening formulas in opaque packaging — full stop. EU SCCS recommends ≤ 0.3% on face.
Despite internet folklore saying otherwise, Retinol and Niacinamide work well together. Niacinamide at pH 5.5–6 can help buffer Retinol-associated irritation.
pH Conflicts: The Silent Formula Killers
Many incompatibilities are really pH mismatches in disguise. A good formulator always asks: what pH does each active need, and can I satisfy all of them in one product?
At this pH, Niacinamide is prone to hydrolysis. Peptide bonds start to weaken. Certain preservatives lose efficacy. Emulsifier esters begin to slowly hydrolyse.
Combine them with AHAs in the same formula and you release free copper ions — a pro-oxidant, not an anti-ageing hero.
Introduce high electrolytes (salts, active acids) at the wrong stage and the gel collapses entirely. Irreversible — you can’t rescue it.
Preservative Traps
Preservative failure is one of the most serious — and most avoidable — formulation problems.
Nonionic surfactants entrap parabens in micelles, dramatically reducing available free paraben. Your challenge data may not reflect real-world shelf life.
Only effective below pH 5 and 6 respectively. Above those thresholds they ionise and lose antimicrobial activity. “Natural” preservative systems above pH 6 are a risk.
Combining Bronopol with ingredients like Triethanolamine can generate nitrosamines — compounds of significant safety concern. This is a hard incompatibility.
No longer permitted in leave-on products in the EU. Restricted to rinse-off only at extremely low concentrations. Essential check for EU market formulas.
Ionic Incompatibilities: When Charges Collide
Cosmetic ingredients carry electrical charges, and opposite charges attract — sometimes in very inconvenient ways.
Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate (anionic emulsifier) combined with Behentrimonium Chloride (cationic conditioner) forms an insoluble complex. Your elegant emulsion becomes lumpy and separated.
Carbomer is anionic. It complexes with cationic conditioners and loses gel structure entirely. Switch to Hydroxyethylcellulose (non-ionic) when cationic actives are needed.
Bentonite is negatively charged and adsorbs cationic conditioning agents so effectively they become essentially inactive. These should never share a formula.
Why “Natural” Doesn’t Mean Compatible
One of the most common misconceptions in indie and clean formulation is that natural ingredients are inherently safer to combine than synthetics. Chemistry doesn’t care about marketing categories.
Contains bergapten, a potent phototoxin causing severe skin darkening and burns under UV exposure. Using non-FCF bergamot in a leave-on product is a safety and regulatory error.
Contain furanocoumarins that cause phototoxic reactions — permanent skin darkening — when applied before UV exposure. Restricted or prohibited in leave-on products in most regulated markets.
A compromised skin barrier (from exfoliation) absorbs fragrance allergens more readily, increasing sensitisation risk. Consider fragrance-free for AHA formulas.
Clay will non-selectively adsorb actives from your formula — peptides, vitamins, preservatives — before they reach skin. Your best actives in a clay mask may never perform.
