Lye Calculators 101: Why Superfat Percentage Matters More Than You Think
Ask most soap makers what superfat means and you’ll get the right general answer: extra oil left unreacted, for skin-friendliness. Ask why they chose 5% instead of 8%, and the answer gets a lot vaguer. That gap — between knowing the term and understanding what it’s actually doing in your batch — is where a lot of soap-making problems start.

Saponification is a chemical reaction between a fat/oil and an alkali (NaOH for bar soap, KOH for liquid soap) that converts them into soap and glycerin. Superfatting means deliberately using less alkali than the stoichiometric amount needed to convert 100% of your oils — leaving a small percentage of oil unreacted in the finished bar.
That unreacted oil does two things: it moisturizes and conditions skin, and it acts as a buffer against lye miscalculation. If your measurements are slightly off, superfat is the margin that keeps a batch from coming out lye-heavy and unsafe to use.
Common Superfat Ranges — And Why They’re Not Interchangeable

Higher isn’t automatically better. Excess unreacted oil is also the primary fuel for rancidity over a bar’s shelf life — every percentage point of superfat above what a recipe needs is a percentage point of oil that can eventually oxidize and shorten usable life.
Where Small Errors Compound
Superfat percentage isn’t just a formulation choice — it’s also your safety margin against calculation and measurement error. This is where scale matters more than most soap makers expect.
A 1% calculation error in a 500g test batch might mean a few grams of lye off-target — usually still within your superfat buffer. The same 1% error scaled to a 50kg production batch is hundreds of grams of lye — potentially enough to eat into your entire superfat margin and leave you with a lye-heavy batch, even though the percentage error never changed.
This is the core reason experienced formulators don’t just scale a home recipe by multiplying ingredient weights. Every oil in a soap recipe has its own saponification value (SAP value) — the amount of alkali required to fully saponify that specific fat. Blended recipes require a weighted SAP calculation, and errors in that calculation scale linearly with batch size.
Getting Superfat Right at Any Scale
- Recalculate lye amount for every batch size — don’t assume a simple multiplication of a small-batch recipe is safe at production scale without re-running the SAP calculation
- Weigh, don’t estimate — lye calculations assume precise measurement; volume-based estimates introduce error that eats directly into your superfat buffer
- Match superfat to shelf life expectations — a bar that will sit in inventory for 12+ months should generally run lower superfat than one sold within weeks
- Account for fragrance and additives — some fragrance oils and botanical additives can accelerate rancidity, meaning a “safe” superfat level with a plain formula may not be safe with additives
