“Clean label” is one of the most requested — and most loosely defined — briefs in personal care formulation. For Bareroot, our plant-forward personal care line, the real challenge wasn’t avoiding a list of ingredients. It was hitting genuine performance without the synthetic tools formulators usually reach for first.
Defining “Clean” Before Formulating Anything
“Clean” means different things to different brands and consumers — no synthetic preservatives, no sulfates, plant-derived only, minimal ingredient count, or some combination. Before any formulation work started, we treated this the same way we’d treat any other technical constraint: define it precisely, because a vague “clean” brief leads to a formula that satisfies no one’s actual definition.
For Bareroot, “clean” was defined as: plant-derived or naturally-sourced ingredients where functionally equivalent to synthetic alternatives, transparent and minimal ingredient lists, and no ingredients on commonly-flagged “avoid” lists — without sacrificing stability, safety, or sensory performance.
Where Clean and High-Performing Pull in the Same Direction
It’s a common misconception that clean-label and effective are inherently in tension. In several areas, they’re not:
- Plant oils as emollients — many plant-derived oils and butters perform as well as synthetic emollients for texture and moisturization, with the main trade-off being batch-to-batch variability rather than functional performance
- Fermented and plant-derived actives — ingredients like fermented extracts can deliver genuine efficacy (barrier support, antioxidant activity) while fitting clean-label sourcing criteria
- Simplicity as a feature — a shorter, more transparent ingredient list can reduce formulation complexity and potential interaction issues, which is a formulation benefit as much as a marketing one
Where the Real Trade-offs Show Up

How We Approached Preservation
Preservation was the area that required the most formulation rigor. Rather than defaulting to a single “natural” preservative and hoping for the best, we approached it the way we’d approach any critical formulation parameter: challenge testing against a full microbial panel, evaluating preservative systems in combination (since natural preservative blends often need multiple components working together to achieve broad-spectrum protection that a single synthetic preservative could achieve alone), and validating performance across the product’s full intended shelf life — not just at time zero.
What We’d Tell Other Formulators Tackling Clean-Label Briefs
- Define “clean” precisely before formulating — a vague brief leads to a formula that satisfies no one’s specific definition of the term
- Don’t assume performance has to be sacrificed — many areas of clean-label formulation can match synthetic performance; identify those first before treating the whole brief as a trade-off
- Put the most rigorous testing where the real risk is — for most clean-label formulas, that’s preservation and stability, not the “hero” ingredients getting the marketing attention
- Budget for batch-to-batch variability — naturally-sourced ingredients need tighter incoming QC specs to keep the finished product consistent

Clean-label formulation isn’t a compromise by default — but it does require more formulation rigor in specific areas (preservation and stability, especially) to reach the same performance bar as a conventional formula.
